Weather Issues?

ISE will likely be slightly refining our Weather Policies as we gradually move our primary venue location to Terrace Hill. However, the bulk of our policies will likely stay in place.  See below.

Information for the current 2016 season at Terrace Hill will be updated as soon as it is available from Terrace Hill.

Meanwhile, for an overview of how ISE approaches and announces potential weather issues that is generally applicable to all of our various venues, please see below - you'll find much helpful advance information about ISE's great weather policies and practices.

But if weather is a CURRENT active issue, a Blue Weather Box appears on THIS PAGE with TODAY's DATE in Blue Ink, where the colored ink section is below (which generally has magenta or Green ink when weather concerns are NOT active).  If you see no current Blue Weather information there, either the weather front is moving too quickly or ISE is experiencing no current weather concerns.

So peruse below for planning purposes- - and take Weather Plan ACTION when the information below appears with TODAY's DATE in Blue Ink.

Re RAIN or COLD or WINDY WEATHER or FLOODS

for Shakesperience Festival

(Note: ISE shows go up in all hot weather! Yes – no matter how hot, because it will be cool cool cool along the River or on our shaded Great Lawns when the sun goes down!)

SPECIFIC WEATHER PLAN INFORMATION

Overview:

WEATHER: Watch the space within the Blue Weather Box just below (some details may appear on our Home Page as well) to learn of any specific indoor plans as weather occurs.

Typically, we offer an INDOOR rain or weather site for MOST (but not all) of our shows!

SPECIAL NOTE:  We generally NEVER "call" a show for weather until 3 or 4 in the afternoon at the earliest- and we usually wait until around 5 or 5:30 to make a weather announcement

HEAT:  See below.  We go up in ALL Hot Weather (even record heat waves.)  Because it will cool down at our venues at nightfall!

FLOODS:  Generally, flood concerns are only applicable to our Simon Estes Amphitheatre site.  In that case, the blue Weather Box (below) will also update you as to plans if upon occaision, the Amphitheater floods.  OVERVIEW OF FLOOD ISSUES: No worries if the Amphitheater and the river have become close friends- the Amphitheater was specifically designed as a flood control mechanism and our alternative outdoor location is as nifty as is the Amphitheater! Typically when the Amphitheater floods but the weather is nice, we are on the scenic Locust street bridge - where we have a stunning view of the State Capital as our backdrop!  The only difference between our alternative outdoor location and the Amphitheater is that there is less grass to sit on - you may wish to bring lawn chairs instead of blankets!

(For general advance planning for weather, see important information below.)

THE ISE WEATHER BOX:

Weather Plan: UPDATES FOR CURRENT SEASON

2016 Season:  THERE ARE NO WEATHER CONCERNS AT THIS TIME!

OVERVIEW OF GENERAL ISE WEATHER PLANS:

THIS "WEATHER BOX" IS USED TO CONVEY WHEN WE KNOW IN ADVANCE (as opposed to passing showers - see below for our policies about brief weather events like that) THAT WE WILL MOVE OR CANCEL A SHOW DUE TO WEATHER.  IFTHIS INFORMATION IN THIS BOX CHANGES TO BLUE INK, THEN WEATHER CONCERNS ARE ACTIVE!

REGARDING ANY RAIN CONCERNS:

THERE ARE EXCEPTIONS.  BUT RARELY WILL WE MAKE A DECISION TO CANCEL OR TO MOVE A SHOW INDOORS BEFORE 3PM ON ANY GIVEN DAY.  USUALLY WE MAKE THE DECISION TO MOVE A SHOW INDOORS BETWEEN ABOUT 3PM AND 5:30 PM ON THE DAY OF THE SHOW.  So, usually, the best time to double check this page is between 3:oo and 5:oo pm on the day of a show.

ONCE WE KNOW WE WILL CALL A SHOW FOR WEATHER, THE INFORMATION THAT A SHOW WILL EITHER BE CANCELLED OR WILL MOVE TO OUR INDOOR VENUE WILL BE LOCATED INSIDE THE BLUE WEATHER BOX!

If the information in this box is not appearing in Blue Ink and does NOT indicate a show has been called for weather but you have weather worries anyway, the front may be moving too fast for us to update this website.  We generally are able to update our phone line more quickly.  So if this box is not yet Blue but you have reason to still be worried above weather, check for weather messages at 515 274 8989 AND follow the remaining directions on this page.

If the information in this box DOES appear in Blue ink and does indicate a show will move indoors, follow the directions on this page to the Indoor Show location if applicable. Indoor shows and concerts start about 15 minutes later than our outdoor shows, so you will have time to find us. Be sure to bring lawn chairs and USUALLY you are welcome to also bring your picnics and wine!

ALSO CONSIDER ATTENDING OUR "RAIN DATE" SHOW AT SIMON ESTES AMPHITHEATRE - usually our "rain date" shows are held on Mondays following any rained out performance and/or on the Monday after the final regularly sheduled night of the festival.

FLOOD CONTINGENCIES

Simon Estes Amphitheatre was built deliberately for a flood relief function. So from time to time we will deal with Amphitheatre flooding.  We will likely know 24 hours in advance if we will move to our alternative location due to the occaisional routine Amphitheatre flooding.  In all liklihood, our alternative location is immediately adjacent to the Amphitheatre directly on one of Des Moines' beautiful historic bridges.  No worries- the show will go on in the style the ISE accustoms you to!

(Date and times of Updates will only be filled in when weather concerns are active)

DIRECTIONS IF A SHOW IS CALLED FOR WEATHER:

Once THIS webpage OR the 515 274 8989 message machine has confirmed that a show will be moved indoors, mosey on over to our designated Rain locatoin.

We have a variety of helpful rain locations.  Usually even for our traveling shows!  BE SURE to check the Blue Weather box above for WHICH site we will be using if applicable.

ABOUT OUR RAIN LOCATIONS:

Each or our various rain locations may differ slightly in terms of whether or not you can bring picnics or alcohol.  Sometimes, you can bring picnics right where we will do the show- just like being in the Amphitheatre, where you can picnic while the show goes on - dinner theatre in the best sense of the word! Other times, you can bring picnics but will need to have your supper  in a different space prior to the show, and after picnic hour you will enter the space where the show is performed.  Rarely, you will not be able to picnic anywhere at all on site, but may still come enjoy the show.  Again, the Blue Weather Boxes will update you.

ABOUT OUR PRIMARY RAIN LOCATION:

Many times but not always, our Rain location for the festival is the Scottish Rite Consistory Building (also called the Masonic Center) at 519 Park Street. We consider this our primary rain location site. Note that this is a different building than the building near Centro Restaurant and Starbucks that is known as the Masonic Temple.

HOW TO LOCATE OUR PRIMARY RAIN SITE: Our primary Rain Location is just a few minutes from the Amphitheater - located on the West side of the River (the opposite side of the river from the outdoor Amphitheater).  Directions: Go to 519 Park Street as noted above. To find this address, head to the immediate north of central downtown Des Moines -off 6th Avenue. The building is a 6 story white stone building between 6th and 5th Avenues. Park Street is a short street just south of Center Street and north of Watson Powell Jr. Way. Again, this is a different building from the "Temple of the Performing Arts")

Note that the building contains some relatively short flights of stair steps, although there is an interior elevator that covers MOST steps.

SPECIAL NOTEDon’t rush.  In most cases when we move indoors for rain, we will hold the curtain for an extra 15 minutes or so, to allow everyone to find us and settle in comfortably!

GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT RAIN OUT:

As of 2016, we currently do NOT have a Rain Date show.

But, if we have a rain out, we may ALSO still have the show that same night!  AND depnding upon our venue, you likely CAN (and should) still bring picnics and lawn chairs and blankets, as when we rain out, we often are not in a traditional theatre.  Instead, we will have a romantic “indoor picnic” location as described below.  NOTE:  You SHOULD bring lawn chairs to the indoor shows as traditional seating may be very limited!

In the past, our primary rain location has been the fabulous “Secret Castle” Tapestry Ballroom at the Scottish Rite Masonic Center in downtown Des Moines.   With its elegant Abusson tapestries and huge stone fireplaces, this is one of the most perfect indoor locations for Shakespeare you will ever see- it is an amazing location and we will have a GREAT time!

  •  We get very excited about our primary rain location.  Because at this great location, even if it rains, you will enjoy terrific FREE theatre in a simply smashing venue!  In fact, it is hard to imagine a more perfect setting for a Shakespeare play than the “Secret Castle” room!  With its huge stone fireplaces, Renaissance tapestries, and terrific atmosphere, this a great romantic place to be in a thunderstorm!  Plus, you may still bring picnics and wine!  There will be plenty of room to spread out with picnics, lawn chairs and blankets- an “indoor picnic” if you will!  So continue to bring your comfy chairs and goodies (and we will have a limited selection of regular chairs –dinner theatre style- too!)
  • We have other great rain locatins as well.  See our Blue Weather boxes for specific directions.

ADDITIONAL GENERAL WEATHER INFORMATION:

  • Weather in Iowa moves fast.  Sometimes we are likely to be able to update our phone line sooner than this webpage. If this page does NOT contain weather information plans for a specific date, and you are concerned about weather, please try calling the phone line listed. (A phone line will be listed HERE if it is applicable). If there is a major weather concern, the message line will have the most current information on weather.
  • PASSING SPRINKLES: If there is no specific rain information on the phone message or on this page, assume the show is ON! Bring an umbrella as we will continue during sprinkles or a light rain - bring a jacket and especially a ground-cloth if it is cool and damp.
  • RAIN HOLDS: If we have to have a temporary RAIN HOLD during a performance, we will announce how long we expect the hold to be.  Holds generally will last no more than 30 minutes, if we feel we can wait out a quick moving shower and resume the show.
  • SUDDEN STORMS: If weather worsens, or on occasions when the weather takes us so much by surprise that we can’t get on top of our messages (this is Iowa, after all!) we will try to have informational signage at the Amphitheater if necessary. Bur for sudden squalls, in the event we end up moving from the Amphitheatre with little notice and in a situation where we are unable to provide signage, if you find the Amphitheater vacated, simply go to the Rain location instead.
  • DANGEROUS STORMS:  If a dangerous weather condition occurs during a show, listen for announcements about how to approach the situation safely.
  • SPECIAL HOT WEATHER NOTE: if it is hot hot hot hot, we will still go up because in our riverside or hilltop venues, we will likely soon be cool cool cool cool once the sun goes down.  But especially in super-hot weather, be sure to bring a sun-umbrella for early picnics - all umbrellas will be lowered when the show starts, which is just about at sundown.

BASIC ISE WEATHER POLICIES REGARDING VIP TICKET PURCHASES:

Remember: we do our best to help “the show go on!” despite the changeable Iowa weather- but we can only do our best.  Please understand that it can be hectic before a show, and we can’t always communicate with you as quickly as we’d like.

But our weather policies are very generous-

if you have complimentary VIP seating courtesy of our Festival, you can always come back any other night of the run and we will still honor your pass on a space available basis- or if worse comes to worse, we will always honor it next year.  We will also do our best to seat you in VIP areas if you attend the show at our indoor location.

Also, if you purchased VIP seating area, Cabaret, or Tent tickets through MidwesTix, you are entltled to a full refund of the ticket price (less any fees paid to MidwesTix) for any shows called for rain before 9pm.  (And if it really bothers you to have to still pay Midwestix fees, let us know- we'll see if we can personally gift those back to you as a token of our thanks for your business!) See the MidwesTix website for more information.

Special events like our VIP night or our Young Professionals party will also be held in our Rain out location if at all possible.  However, if we are unable to move these events, your ticket or pass will be honored next year or you can arrange for a refund- contact us to discuss options.
